A 24-year-old man sustained non-life threatening abdominal injuries during the incident.

Police were told that the victim, who had just finished work at a nearby restaurant, went to the assistance of a woman who was being assaulted by another man.

As the victim attempted to intervene, the man produced a knife and stabbed the victim in the left side of his abdomen.

Following the stabbing, the offender ran off along Yarra Promenade while the victim approached a near-by parking attendant for help.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
