Southgate burglary

Burglars targeted businesses at Southgate Melbourne Restaurant and Shopping Centre last month.

Three commercial tenants were hit on August 21, with the Melbourne Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) chasing two suspects.

According to police, two burglars allegedly gained access to the complex shortly before 1am, causing significant damage and stealing money.

The manager of one of the tenancies struck, Roop Rani Southgate, told Southbank Local News that it was the second time in eight months that their store had been targeted by burglars following a previous incident in January.

Manager Prasheeta Yashar said burglars had caused thousands of dollars in damages and stolen cash during both break-ins.

Ms Yashar said that during last month’s break-in, burglars had gained access to the business by ripping out a metal bin from the Southgate Courtyard and throwing it through its front window.

Police said that investigations were still ongoing and that it was reviewing fingerprints found at the scene.

If anyone has any information regarding the burglary they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
