Visionaries visit Southbank

Visionaries visit Southbank

Some of the biggest names in architecture toured the BMW site at 118 City Rd on May 16 as part of a design competition for a future development at the site.

Having paid over $100 million for the site in 2017, developer Beulah International embarked on an international architecture hunt earlier this year for its proposed $2 billion “Southbank by Beulah” project.

The developer has finalised a shortlist of six architects, with representatives from each firm visiting Southbank last month to survey the site both on the ground and above from Eureka Skydeck.

The six international firms include Coop Himmelb(l)au, MAD Architects, MVRDV, OMA, UNStudio and Bjarke Ingels Group, who were all requested to submit concepts to a special jury on May 17.

The developer has set out a bold vision for the project – the creation of a lifestyle precinct, which could potentially comprise residential, world class retail, a 5-star hotel and cultural and public spaces.

The final concept could also potentially include a landmark commercial component, with hopes of attracting global tech giants such as Amazon, Google and Apple to Southbank.

The winning design will be announced in July.
