Choir call out!

Choir call out!

By Sarah Bartlett

Southbank’s new community arts organisation Upbeat Arts is looking for new members.

Meeting every Friday at the Boyd Community Hub, the South Village Singers community choir supports marginalised communities through education and social inclusion.

The program offers tailored arts and cultural programs that strive to engage, educate and empower people that are disadvantaged, marginalised or socially excluded.

The choir’s two leaders, Kerry Gerraty and Levi McGrath, are experienced musical artists and educators who are passionate about helping their local community, using the choir as their vehicle.

Having worked with the choir since its inception, Kerry specialises in classical piano, choral music and arts event management. Since 2011, she has worked with Short Black Opera Company - Australia’s National Indigenous Opera Company.

She is also the manager of the Dhungala Children’s Choir (DDC), which assists indigenous youth performers from around Australia with all components of rehearsal and performance work.

Levi McGrath is a social justice musician from Melbourne. His work focuses on bringing music to the younger generation.

Mr McGrath released his debut album Move in 2007. Other professional work includes the release of his album Children of War in 2009, which was inspired by work with former child soldiers in Uganda. The album promotes the message of social change and covers the stories of suffering, hope and dignity.

He has also toured Canada supporting former lead vocalist of Newsboys, as well as supporting US rock bands Third Day and Need To Breathe on their Australian tour. Mr McGrath frequently tours Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
