Meet Dr Liam West

After years of being frustrated by the use of excessive medications and operations in the hospital system, Dr Liam West embarked on a full-time career in sports and exercise medicine.

Based locally at the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre, his passion for using targeted exercises and active rehabilitation methods continues to help patients of all ages and abilities to their physical and sporting best after musculoskeletal injury.

After completing a sports science degree with first class honours, Dr West graduated in medicine from Cardiff University in Wales in 2013.

He then went on to work in Oxford for two years as a junior doctor and completed a diploma in sports and exercise medicine during this same period.

He developed his passion for sports medicine working in various environments, including as team doctor for the U16 English Football (soccer) team, at the Celebral Palsy Soccer World Cup and for Birmingham City Ladies FC in the Premier League.

In 2015, Dr West moved to Melbourne in order to pursue specialist training in sport and exercise medicine.

He now works for Hawthorn FC, VIC Country AFL Academy and Melbourne Victory.

In addition to these extensive clinical experiences, Dr West has led UK and European-wide sports medicine committees, is a senior editor for the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) and in 2017, he was elected the president of the Victorian Council of Sports Medicine Australia (SMA).

He has been published multiple times in respected medical journals, has presented at several international conferences and produces regular BJSM podcasts and blogs with industry experts from around the world.

Dr West continues to practice what he preaches. After a (relatively) successful semi-professional soccer career in the UK he has now taken up Aussie Rules playing for the University Blues in the VAFA as an erratic small forward!

Otherwise, on the weekend he can be found jogging around the Botanic Gardens or grabbing a coffee with friends.
