Cost of Living premieres at Southbank Theatre

Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) explores the essence of human connection in Cost of Living: a deeply moving play premiering at Southbank Theatre on Saturday, September 14.

Martyna Majok’s award-winning script, Cost of Living, will begin performances in mid-September at The Sumner, Southbank

The winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama script offers a searing human interest, delving into the universal need for connection and the complexities of caregiving.

Rather than disability, this dramatic play focuses on how we care for each other and ourselves. Directed by Anthea Williams, Cost of Living follows two pairs of characters as they navigate their intertwined lives.

Rachel Edmonds (Have You Tried Yoga?) plays Ani, who unexpectedly reunites with her husband Eddie, played by Aaron Pedersen (Mystery Road), after a life-altering accident. From divorce to care, they navigate the complexities of their new relationship.

On the other hand, John, an affluent PhD student with cerebral palsy, played by Oli Pizzey Stratford (Neighbours), hires Jess, another graduate student and night barmaid, played by Mabel Li (Safe Home), to help him with his work. Their interactions force both characters to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves and their motivations.

These complex twists and turns highlight the tenderness and challenges inherent in the human experience.

Known for its emotional, psychological but also humoristic look, this play is a 90-minute theatre experience.

“This production boasts an outstanding ensemble cast, who will bring depth and authenticity to their roles,” MTC’s artistic director and co-CEO Anne-Louise Sarks said.

Performances begin September 14 at Southbank Theatre, The Sumner. Tickets are on sale now via mtc.com.au from $75 plus booking fee. •
