Barbershop bursts into Southbank

Barbershop bursts into Southbank

If you are a fan of harmony singing at its best, then the 2015 Barbershop Harmony Convention being held in Melbourne at Hamer Hall and the Deakin Edge theatre this month is a must.

From September 16 to 19, visitors will have the rare opportunity to see and hear the finest Barbershop Choruses and Quartets in Australia in both competition and in concert.

The Barbershop Harmony Australia (BHA) Harmony Gold Rush 2015 National Convention in Melbourne will be a joyous celebration of music, friendship, competition and fun.

The convention is held bi-annually and is hosted by a different state each time. This year, the Melbourne-based “Melbournaires Chorus” has been granted the honour of hosting the event, something which has not happened since 2002.

The convention program runs across four days and comprises, youth competitions, quartet competitions, chorus competitions as well as the highlight - the Grand Showcase Harmony Spectacular Concert, which will feature the medal winners and special American guests, the 2006 World Gold Medal Champion Barbershop Quartet, Vocal Spectrum.

The concert will be presented by 3AW’s radio host Denis Walter and is an evening not to be missed.

There will be hundreds of Barbershop singer delegates in Melbourne, most of who will attend and celebrate the official launch of the convention at a massed sing-in and open-to-the-public free event at Federation Square. The lunchtime event to launch the convention will be held on September 17 at 12.30pm.

City of Melbourne Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley and 3AW’s Philip Brady, will be onstage as the official presenters of the launch, and there will also be an onstage performance by Vocal Spectrum.

The highlight of the event is without doubt the Grand Showcase Harmony Spectacular Concert, which will be held at the Hamer Hall on the evening of Saturday, September 19.

The Youth Competition and Concert will be held at the Deakin Edge Theatre, and entry will be by means of a gold coin donation at the door.

Low cost tickets at Hamer Hall are being made available for the competition phases of the quartets and choruses on Friday, September 18.
