Bollywood fitness fun

If you’re keen to break the fitness monotony of repeated gym workouts, why not try the popular Bollywood Dance Class at the Boyd Community Hub?

Led by dance company The Naach Box, which is spearheaded by instructors Karthika Vijaykumar and Raphael Jacob, the class has proven to be a hit with Southbank locals.

The pair will host classes at Boyd throughout the year on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8pm and, for a $5 donation, locals can experience the fun that is Bollywood dance.

However, Karthika explained that, while the focus was centred on Bollywood inspired dance routines, the class included a range of different themes including salsa, belly dancing and even hip-hop!

“Typically peoples’ perception of Bollywood dancing is that it’s a lot of dancing around trees, a lot of drama and a lot of colour. If you watch Bollywood movies that’s what a lot of it is about. Any situation has a song and dance,” she said. “I think the difference that Raph and I bring to the club is that we try and use different dance forms.”

According to the pair, the structure of the class begins with a warm-up involving core conditioning. This is followed by the mixed choreography – where the fun begins!

Both coming from diverse dancing backgrounds, Raphael said he and Karthika always brought a range of influences to their dance routines, which was typical of dance in modern day Bollywood.
