Boyd school redevelopment

With the exponential growth of Southbank as a residential precinct, the need for community and green space is becoming increasingly important.

It was for this reason the City of Melbourne purchased the former JH Boyd Girls School site, with the vision of creating the first community hub for the area.

You may have noticed the construction happening around the old JH Boyd School building in City Rd and thought it was more towers going in, but this project has a difference.

The site is currently in phase one of its makeover, which includes a community facility in the heritage school building.

City of Melbourne councillor Ken Ong says the council has big plans for the space.

“The aim was to create a new community hub within the Southbank precinct comprising library and associated community facilities, together with a new area of public open space and residential and commercial development,” Cr Ong said.

With work well underway, the site will help provide the space the whole community within Southbank has been longing for.

Cr Ong noted: “The refurbishment of the heritage Boyd School building is progressing well and will be complete in the first quarter of 2012, with a library fitted out by mid-year.”
