Check out our very own private cinema

Among the high-rise apartment towers in Southbank, there are any number of hidden locations. ‘Southbank Local News’ found one last month and it’s so good, we can’t help but share it with you.

The Backlot Studios in Haig Street is Australia’s first and only private cinema and event space and, after a year of establishing itself within the film industry, owners Mark D’Angelo and Tony Ianiro want to open the doors to the Southbank public.

Both Mark and Tony worked at Paramount Pictures before starting the venture and used those contacts to attract media screenings, post-production screenings and industry-based events. They now want to get back to the community around them.

Mark explained that Backlot would be the ideal location for a local film club and its an idea they’re very keen to explore.

“We’re really passionate to get the local community behind the cinema and take ownership of the space.”

Tony added: “This space can become yours. When you book this space it becomes home, which of course works well for any social club, but especially a film-based one.”

The film club is just one way to interact with the cinema. It is also ideal for kids’ parties.

“Imagine having your kid’s party without having to worry about the general public!” Mark said.

The cinema is surprisingly affordable to hire out too. Prices start from $450 for a three-hour session, including a film. When you consider it holds 75 seats.

If films aren’t your thing, there are also options for gaming on the big screen, plus the boys plan to show the World Cup later this year. Or you could even just come down for a look.

“We’d be happy for anyone to contact us and come down for a look. We’ll give you a tour, watch a few trailers, just so you can check it out,” Tony explained.
