The first ever international exhibition dedicated to fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier was announced last month and it will call Southbank home.

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) will host the display, which will showcase over 140 garments Gaultier put together throughout his career.

Gaultier has designed dresses for A-list Australians such as Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue.

Mr Gaultier said he felt privileged his show would make the journey to our shores.

“I am honoured and flattered that my exhibition will travel to Australia and I am thrilled to be returning to a country that I have visited only once, many years ago.”

While making the announcement, Arts Minister Heidi Victoria said the display would span the entirety of Mr Gaultier’s glittering career.

“The exhibition includes the first dress he created in 1971 through to recent works created for some of the world’s most glamorous men and women,” Ms Victoria explained.

“The exhibition promises to be another show-stopper and I look forward to welcoming it to Melbourne.”

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk will open in October and run across summer.
