Inspiring performing arts

Students will converge on Southbank’s Arts Precinct to learn about what it takes to succeed in the entertainment industry.

The 2018 Performing Arts Careers Day on May 28, hosted by Wakakirri in partnership with the Victorian Government and Youth Central is an opportunity for secondary students to be inspired, informed and encouraged to choose a career in the performing arts.

Wakakirri’s co-founder and festival director Adam Loxley, believes the event is an opportunity for young people to deepen their appreciation for the arts.

“At Wakakirri we believe that participation in the arts is essential if young people are to develop confidence in expressing themselves,” he said.

Wakakirri is Australia’s largest performing arts event for schools and every year includes the Wakakirri Story Dance Challenge. Established in 1992, the program involves 20,000 students across each state and territory.

The event will include talks by industry professionals who will speak at length about their own experiences in the industry, direct career pathways and how an event like the Wakakirri Story Dance Challenge can enhance future job prospects.

To further demonstrate how the Wakakirri Story Dance Challenge can kick start the students’ career, the panel will include Wakakirri alumni Alex Dellaportas (also founder of Spark Youth Dance Company), as well as Min Pakoo and Wada Kwan, who were awarded scholarships to Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance after their breakout 2017 Wakakirri performances.

Joining the panel will be stage and screen star Joshua Horner (Dancing With The Stars), actor, writer and singer Alex Papps (Play School, Home and Away), and dancer and choreographer Jason Coleman (So You Think You Can Dance, choreographer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games).

The event is an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of young people, giving them the chance to creatively express themselves. By actively involving, students, schools and industry, Wakakirri hopes to demonstrate the thriving potential of the performing arts.
