Melbourne takes a bite of the Big Apple

Melburnians will get a taste of the Big Apple in a new exhibition bringing the city that never sleeps home to Melbourne.

From the subway to Broadway, MEL&NYC has a little bit of everything New York City, mashed up with Melbourne’s own culture, food, music and laneways.

The exhibition comes as part of MoMA at NGV: 130 Years Of Modern And Contemporary Art, it will combine New York City’s art, culture, music and food scene with everything Melbourne has to offer.

Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley said the exhibition showed the global reach of Melbourne’s creative sector, showcasing local talent alongside NYC’s best.

“More than a dozen of Melbourne’s best cultural organisations are collaborating with New York-based partners, to present this exciting and ambitious city-wide program,” he said.

The packed line-up includes a one-off performance by New York’s award-winning singer Regina Spektor at Hamer Hall and a very special live TV event, RockWiz Salutes New York, with host Julia Zemiro and guests (still to be announced).

The ground floor of the NGV will be taken over with artworks from iconic names including Jackson Pollock, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo.

The exhibition flows effortlessly from past to present, with projects like Split Screen: A Tale Of Two Cities, a video piece celebrating the fashion, art and culture connection between the two hubs by Instagram images shared over 24 hours.

A celebration of the two cities wouldn’t be complete without secret pop-up laneway gigs to pay homage to both cities’ underground music scene and keen music fans can sign up to be notified on the NGV website.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the exhibition was a major tourism draw card for the city.

“New York City is the city that never sleeps – and where better to host a festival of all it has to offer in food, art and music, than right here in the vibrant, cultural capital of our nation,” he said.

MEL&NYC runs from June to August this year.
