Wieners race goes worldwide

The inaugural dachshund race, Running of the Wieners at Southgate, attracted international attention last month.

Presented by German Bier Hall Hophaus, in celebration of the start of Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 19, registrations from dachshund owners to enter their pets booked out in just three days following the event’s announcement.

The day, which attracted more than 2000 people, included a series of heats leading up to a grand final, as well as a best-dressed dachshund competition.

Overall, the race raised more than $3900 for Dachshund Rescue Australia, a charity which rescues and privately re-homes dachshunds.

The media response went worldwide, with many media outlets running with a story that this was Melbourne or Australia’s first ever dachshund race.

The event went viral, with overseas news outlets such as the Huffington Post, CBS News and the Sunday Telegraph picking up the story, as well as a number of popular online news sites.

Red Rock Leisure marketing manager, Katrina Sherlock said the response to the event was incredible.

“We were overwhelmed by the response from Melbourne’s dachshund owners and the general public just wanting to come and watch the adorable dogs racing and dressing up for the day,” she said.

“They are a very unique breed and something we thought would be a bit of fun for a few dachshunds and their owners turned into something that stopped Melbourne in its tracks.”
