Elephant Man

Elephant Man

By Chelsea Cucinotta

Opening on August 9, the highly acclaimed production The Real and Imagined History of the Elephant Man will run until August 27 at the Malthouse Theatre.

Set in 19th century London, The Real and Imagined History of the Elephant Man follows the life of ostracised elephant man Joseph Merrick, from his birth to death.

With previous adaptations including a David Lynch film in 1980, the tale of the elephant man continues to draw in audiences young and old.

Director Matthew Lutton and playwright Tom Wright give the story new meaning in this performance, as they explore the curiosity and empathy Merrick inspires in those around him from his time in Victorian freak shows, to seeking asylum at the London Hospital in 1879.

Daniel Monks will perform the role of Merrick in his Malthouse Theatre debut.
