Fifteen arrested in South Melbourne over burglaries, family violence

Alleged burglars, car thieves, family violence offenders and arsonists have been arrested during a series of warrants in Park Street Towers and Dorcas St in South Melbourne earlier this week.

Fifteen people were arrested following warrants at more than 20 addresses inside two housing unit complexes on Park St and Dorcas St on Tuesday, July 2.

Eight men and seven women – all from South Melbourne and aged between 23 and 59 – were charged with a range of offences including burglary, theft of motor vehicle, arson, criminal damage, family violence offences and drug offences.

South Melbourne Uniform Senior Sergeant Travis Costelow said, “We want all residents to feel safe in their home and broader surroundings, so will have no hesitation in knocking on the doors of those who blatantly flout the law.”

 

During the operation, we had several residents come up and thank police for being there and listening to their concerns.

 

Arrests of note include:

  • A 28-year-old woman was arrested on outstanding warrants in relation to two counts of burglary, theft of motor vehicle, and possess methylamphetamine. She was granted bail to appear in Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on November 20. She is expected to be charged over an alleged shop steal incident and theft of another vehicle.
  • A 25-year-old man was arrested on outstanding warrants in relation to theft of a motor vehicle, theft and two counts of burglary, as well as criminal damage and possessing methylamphetamine. He will appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
  • A 40-year-old woman was arrested on outstanding warrants in relation to arson and criminal damage. She was bailed and is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 20.
  • A 59-year-old man was arrested on outstanding warrants in relation to burglary, theft, and contravening a family violence safety notice. He was bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
  • A 30-year-old woman was arrested on outstanding warrants in relation to contravening a family violence order and will appear in Frankston Magistrates’ Court on July 16.
  • A 23-year-old man was arrested on outstanding warrants in relation to failing to answer bail as well as three counts of obtain property by deception. He was bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 20.
  • A 58-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were allegedly found in possession of methylamphetamine. Both were bailed to court at a later date.
  • A 24-year-old woman will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date after allegedly being detected on a motorbike travelling approximately 95km/h in a 70km/h signposted area in Windsor. It will be further alleged she was a suspended rider. The vehicle was impounded at a cost of almost $900.

South Melbourne uniform police – with assistance from St Kilda uniform police, the Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit, the Prahran Divisional Response Unit, and Dog Squad – were all involved in the warrants.
