Sunday Market relocates to Southbank Promenade
After more than 20 years positioned around the Arts Centre, Southbank’s Sunday Market, which last year relocated to Southgate, will now be situated along the scenic Southbank Promenade.
The Sunday Market at Southgate celebrates Melbourne’s vibrant local artisans.
Visitors can come to explore the market, meet the makers and artists face to face, and gain insight into the products and the inspiration behind their creations.
Previously operating undercover within Southgate, the move to the promenade allows the stallholders to become more visible, ensuring the community spirit of the market continues to flourish.
“The Sunday Market move to Southgate has allowed stallholders to continue trading at a time when closure seemed inevitable,” senior marketing manager at ESR Australia and New Zealand Fran Hutcheson said.
Now, along the Southbank Promenade, the market offers them exposure to more than 40,000 visitors daily, opening new opportunities to grow their customer base.
Long-standing Sunday Market trader Jackie Sanders, whose business Crafty Jack has been a market staple for more than 25 years, welcomed the change.
“Visually, it’s fantastic because people can see us now. There were people who didn’t know where we’d gone, so it’s great seeing more customers coming back,” Ms Sanders told Southbank News.
“We’re really appreciative to Fran and the team for giving us this opportunity to expand the market, it’s been wonderful.”
Currently, around 20 traders are part of the market, with plans to welcome more soon. The variety of businesses on offer makes for an exciting and diverse experience for visitors.
“The relocation is a new beginning for the Sunday Market, sparking the creativity of many vendors,” Ms Hutcheson said.
“In recent weeks, we have seen a notable surge in stallholder applications, speaking volumes about the potential they see at the Southbank Promenade.” •
