Victorian housing needs: building it where people want to live
Victoria continues to be number one in home approvals, starts, completions, and best of all, first home buyers.
While these results are encouraging, we know there is more work to do – that is why we are working to get more homes faster.
We have introduced bold reforms to deliver more homes near train and tram stations, a 10-year pipeline of land for family homes and backyards, and to slash stamp duty for off-the-plan apartments, units and townhouses.
Victoria continues to build thousands more homes than any other state, with more than 61,000 home completions over the past 12 months – equivalent to building around 168 homes every single day.
ABS data released last week shows Victoria built 61,260 homes over the year to the end of the September quarter 2024 – 15,600 more homes than NSW and 28,500 more than Queensland.
The data on homes completed in Victoria is an 8.8 per cent increase year on year, while NSW built 45,692 homes – a 4.4 per cent decline year on year.
We are working hard to ensure social housing renters and people who need housing support have greater access to safe, secure and stable housing. This includes:
• the delivery of more and better homes across the state with $6.3 billion of investment in new social and affordable housing through the Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund, delivering more than 13,300 modern, accessible and energy efficient homes;
• upgrading and improving the comfort and liveability of more than 25,000 social housing homes through the $528 million Building Works Stimulus package, exceeding the target of 23,000 homes;
• testing and refining effective ways to bring renter voice into the design and delivery of housing services and get input into specific reform directions such as through the Statewide Public Housing Renters Consultative Committee;
• supporting Aboriginal organisations to become registered community housing providers under the regulatory system and participate in the Big Housing Build Program; and
• on top of this, we are partnering with the Albanese Labor Government to deliver more social and affordable homes in Victoria through their innovative Housing Australia Future Fund and Social Housing Accelerator Program investments – and so much more. •
