Applications open for Merlyn Myer Music Commission
Melbourne Recital Centre (MRC) is calling for applications for the sixth Merlyn Myer Music Commission; a unique opportunity for one talented female composer in Australia to earn artistic growth and recognition.
Created in honour of Dame Merlyn Myer (1900–1982), this annual award celebrates women’s contributions to music with a generous $12,000 cash prize and comprehensive support.
The selected composer will craft up to 30 minutes of new music, which will premiere in November 2025 at the Primrose Potter Salon, performed by the renowned Syzygy Ensemble.
The Merlyn Myer Music Commission is open to Australian female composers and welcomes music in any genre, allowing for exceptional creative freedom.
Past winners include Brenda Gifford (2023), Nat Bartsch (2021), and Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO (2019).
Applications close at noon on Monday, December 2, 2024. Composers must submit a 200-word biography, a project statement, recent work links, and contact details. An optional one-page PDF with additional project information may also be included.
Rupert and Annabel Myer, reflecting on the program’s legacy, note that it “encourages compositions that stretch the imagination, challenge performers, and engage audiences.”
This year’s commission also includes opportunities for students to attend rehearsals and workshops, fostering community involvement in the creative process.
