Melbourne’s beloved floating bar and restaurant, Arbory Afloat, is set to make a dazzling return to the Yarra River (Birrarung) for its 10th season on August 29 – this time chanelling the pulsating energy, colours and rhythms of Rio de Janeiro.

From beachside glamour to rainforest vibrancy, the theme draws from Brazil’s iconic seaside city – often called “Cidade Maravilhosa” or the “Marvelous City” – known for its sun-drenched beaches, vibrant culture and carnival spirit.

“Think of Rio and golden beaches, samba beats and dramatic natural beauty come to mind,” HQ Group’s chief marketing officer Georgie Larkins said. “It’s a city that embodies celebration, creativity and connection, and we’re bringing all of that to life at Afloat this year.”

Guests can expect a complete design transformation. Interior designer Emily Jamieson has taken inspiration from Rio’s rainforest, beaches and famed street culture. Expect lush green umbrellas, sunset-hued cushions, rope and rattan bars, hand-painted murals, and vivid colour pops reflecting Rio’s energetic beachside life.

The venue’s cocktail program will be equally spirited. Curated by HQ Group’s Tom Younger in collaboration with Straight Up Cocktails, the menu will feature fruit-forward creations bursting with tropical ingredients like guava, passionfruit, açaí and citrus. Highlights include a Passionfruit Pisco Sour, Coconut Water Vodka Highball, Raspberry Chilcano, and a dedicated frozen cocktail section starring Mango Batidas and Piña Coladas.

Afloat’s food menu will celebrate Brazil’s rich cultural fusion, blending Portuguese, Indigenous, African, Japanese, and Latin American influences. Executive chef Paul Dunlop has crafted a vibrant lineup of snacks and share plates that nod to Rio’s street food scene – from fried cheese and crispy prawns to grilled meats and bold-flavoured arepas.

And in true Rio fashion, Afloat is also promising a party like no other.

“No country throws a party like Brazil – and there’s no Brazilian party like Rio Carnival,” Larkins said. “We’ll bring that energy to our events program, from weekday salsa classes to full-venue samba-fuelled celebrations.”

Located beside Flinders Walk, Arbory Afloat opens August 29, with reservations available from September 5 onwards. For bookings, holiday event tickets and updates, visit afloat.melbourne or follow on Instagram
