Bike and scooter registration and engraving comes to Southbank

A bike and scooter registration and engraving event will be held this February in Southbank to help combat bike theft.

The event is being organised by the newly-formed Southbank Neighbourhood Watch and Southbank Victoria Police officers at the Boyd Community Hub on Sunday, February 23.

Local police will engrave identification onto attendees’ bikes so they can be returned by police if recovered after being lost or stolen.

Southbank Police Station’s commander Snr Sgt Alex O’Toole said there were thousands of bike thefts in the city.

According to Snr Sgt O’Toole, a common problem was that if bikes were found, there was often no way to reconnect the owner with the bike.

By engraving the owner’s driver’s licence number onto the bike, the police are able to easily identify the owner.

Initiatives like this have been tried and tested in other parts of the state, and Snr Sgt O’Toole is thrilled to be putting together an event in Southbank.

However, this wouldn’t be possible without the Southbank Neighbourhood Watch, whose president Chris Milner has been instrumental in getting the group off the ground over the past year.

Mr Milner said it marked an “important” milestone as it was their first official event.

We want to empower everyone to have strong community ties to protect themselves and their property, he said.

While initial membership numbers are strong, Mr Milner encourages any residents to join and help make Southbank safer. •
