Boost for train passengers as Degraves St Subway reopens

After nearly three years, the Degraves St Subway has reopened in a big win for passengers, with six new lifts improving accessibility for people switching platforms at Flinders Street Station.

The subway has been refurbished as part of the Metro Tunnel Project and will form part of the direct connection between the City Loop’s Flinders Street Station and the new state-of-the-art Town Hall Station when it opens later this year.

The connection will mean passengers will be able to interchange easily between the two stations and Metro Tunnel and City Loop services, without touching off and on.

The new lifts to all of Flinders Street Station’s platforms give passengers more options getting from one platform to another, helping passenger flow and making the subway accessible to people with mobility needs for the first time.

Work on the subway included replacing the ceiling and improving lighting, ventilation, fire and security systems. Melbourne’s much-loved historic Campbell Arcade, which adjoins the subway, remains closed but will reopen in the coming months.

The new Town Hall Station will improve access to Melbourne landmarks like Federation Square and St Paul’s Cathedral and revitalise the southern end of the CBD with a revamped City Square and offices, shopping and cafes at the future Town Hall Place building over the station entrance near Young and Jackson.

Work on Town Hall Station is progressing well as crews continue to build the station’s entrances and fit out the concourse and platforms, while the huge acoustic shed at Federation Square will be removed over the coming weeks.

The Metro Tunnel is the biggest upgrade of Melbourne’s train network since the City Loop opened in 1981.

It will connect the busy Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines via a new tunnel under the city, easing congestion in the City Loop and better connecting all Victorians to jobs, healthcare and education. •
