Community invited to have its say on new ACCA park
Southbank locals are invited to attend community information sessions this month to learn more about plans to transform the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) forecourt into a new public park.
The $1.5 million project, led by the City of Melbourne and funded through the Victorian Government’s Open Space for Everyone – Better Parks and Playgrounds program, will deliver more than 800 square metres of new green space in the heart of Southbank.
Expected to begin in early 2026 and be completed by mid-2026, the upgrade will replace the existing paved forecourt with new lawn areas, native plantings and seating, while keeping the space active for ACCA’s creative events and public gatherings.
Lord Mayor Nick Reece said the project marked another important step in the council’s mission to turn Melbourne into a “true garden city”.
“We’re turning Melbourne into a true garden city – unlocking more green open space where it’s needed most, right in the heart of Southbank,” Cr Reece said.
“We’re getting on with transforming the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art forecourt, which will deliver more than 800 square metres of new green space in our most densely populated suburb.”
The council’s environment portfolio lead Cr Davydd Griffiths said the new park would balance greenery with public use.
“The ACCA forecourt upgrade is one of 16 new or improved parks and gardens we’re delivering this financial year – helping Melbourne flourish as our population grows,” Cr Griffiths said.
“The forecourt will be transformed with new plantings, lawn areas and seating, while keeping it a vibrant space for creative events and activations.”
Two community information sessions will be held at the Malthouse Theatre to share design concepts and gather feedback:
- Sunday, October 19, 2pm to 3pm – The Bagging Room
- Thursday, October 23, 6pm to 7pm – The Tower Room
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend and help shape the future of this key Southbank public space. •
