DARKFIELD extends Melbourne season, bringing INVISIBLE and FLIGHT to Southbank

Melbourne audiences have been given extra time to experience one of the city’s most talked-about immersive theatre offerings, with DARKFIELD announcing an extended summer season and a major relocation to Queensbridge Square in Southbank.

The internationally acclaimed audio experiences INVISIBLE and FLIGHT – which unfold in complete darkness inside specially fitted shipping containers – will continue their Melbourne run from January 14 to February 2, shifting from Arts Centre Melbourne to a prominent new site on the Yarra River.

Produced in Australia by Realscape Productions, DARKFIELD has attracted a global audience of more than 700,000 people, earning widespread acclaim for its unsettling, sensory-driven storytelling.

Using 360-degree binaural sound and meticulously crafted sets, each production places audiences at the centre of a surreal, disorienting narrative that blurs the line between imagination and reality.

Realscape’s Amy Johnson said the extension reflected Melbourne’s appetite for bold and unconventional arts experiences.

“INVISIBLE and FLIGHT are ideal for anyone who loves the thrill of multisensory entertainment, and wants to experience something completely outside the norm,” she said.

In INVISIBLE, audiences are introduced to “The Invisible Man”, who reveals the secret to vanishing from sight and poses an unsettling question: if you cannot be seen, what might you be capable of?

Meanwhile, FLIGHT offers a chilling dive into the “many worlds” interpretation of quantum mechanics, suggesting that every possible outcome of a passenger’s journey is unfolding simultaneously across countless realities.

Both works have been praised for their psychological intensity and theatrical daring, with critics calling them “unnerving”, “thought-provoking” and “edge-of-your-seat” theatre.

The move to Queensbridge Square will give Southbank residents and visitors a rare chance to encounter DARKFIELD’s signature shipping containers up close, placed in one of the precinct’s busiest public spaces at the height of Melbourne’s summer cultural season.

Tickets start from $22.50, with multi-show bundles available, including a “Double Double Date” package and the “Darkfield Max Pack” for audiences wanting to experience both productions.

DARKFIELD experiences are suitable for ages 13 and over, with content warnings available online.
