Science meets art

Southbank’s Testing Grounds will be filled with pop-up installations in August as part of the Science Gallery Melbourne’s (SGM) third season of its public interactive art and science series.

Returning for its third season, this year’s topic will be DISPOSABLE: Reimagining your waste. Presented as a mini-festival, it will feature a range of art and science pop-up installations, events, exhibits and experiments focusing on creative and innovative solutions to our war on waste and the ever-growing culture of excess.

“From consumer culture, fast fashion, single use plastics and ways to recycle human waste, DISPOSABLE will delve into our garbage bins and human digestive systems to unwrap solutions to the often-overwhelming challenge of what to do with our waste,” SGM director Rose Hiscock said.

Some of the highlights are Urinotron, which turns human urine into a sustainable power source and Trash Robot, which is a remote-controlled garbage collector.

DISPOSABLE will also showcase works at University of Melbourne’s Parkville Campus and the Footscray Community Arts Centre.

DISPOSABLE will run from 1 August to 31 August. Stay tuned for more details on the event in our next edition.
