Flavours of Japan returns to South Melbourne Market
South Melbourne Market will celebrate the flavours and traditions of Japan this June with the return of its latest Foodie Affair event, running across six dates from June 4 to 14.
A Foodie Affair: Flavours of Japan invites marketgoers to explore a self-guided tasting trail of 10 Japanese-inspired dishes, along with a drink and cultural experiences, across a curated route of the Market’s beloved traders.
Participants can choose from two daily sessions (11am or 1pm) on select Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with tickets priced at $79. An optional $129 bundle includes a take-home “Flavours of Japan Discovery Bag” featuring matcha or incense, gourmet pantry items, and a Japanese art card.
Featured dishes include black sesame cookies from My Cookie Factory, torched salmon sashimi from Oyster Bar by Aptus, and matcha-coated strawberries paired with iced tea from Tea Drop. Other traders such as Simply Spanish, Smithburg and UGO Burrata Bar will offer their own Japanese-infused bites.
Visitors can also enjoy free tastings of soba noodles, sake, whisky, Japanese wine and beer from various market stalls during the event.
Beyond the food, Flavours of Japan will highlight Japanese culture through market traders Osara and Tomi Art in the SO:ME Space. Visitors can browse traditional homewares and accessories while learning about cultural practices like tea ceremonies, flower arrangement, and incense appreciation.
The Foodie Affair series has become a staple of the Market’s event calendar, following past themes celebrating truffles, seafood and cheese.
South Melbourne Market is located at the corner of Coventry and Cecil streets and is accessible by foot, bike, car or the No. 96 tram. The market is open every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am.
