Have yourself a merry little Metro Tunnel Christmas with The Huxleys

Melbournians, get ready to be bedazzled in Melbourne CBD this Christmas. 

After a truly sparkly experience in 2021, The Metro Tunnel Creative Program has teamed up with visual and performance duo The Huxleys again to bring joy and festive cheer to the Town Hall Station construction sites on Friday, December 9. 

Kicking off at Federation Square, the dynamic duo will promenade through the streets of Melbourne to City Square, passing by Flinders St and Degraves St. 

Onlookers can expect the unexpected as The Huxleys present a visual assault of sparkle, surrealism and the downright absurd using visual art, performance and fashion. 

A silent disco tour between The Metro Tunnel’s NOLA (North of La Trobe) Precinct and Federation Square, led by Guru Dudu, will serve as a prelude to The Huxleys’ dazzling parade. 

Adding to the magic, the Rainbow Voices Choir will also be serenading visitors to Federation Square, and the square’s big screen will host a public screening of The Wizard of Oz. 

The childhood favourite film will be shown in Fed Square at 6pm before The Huxleys make a return to the square at 8pm to make the yuletide gay with Christmas carols on the main stage.

A Christmas Tree show and light projections on Flinders Street will conclude the evening. 

If you can’t make it on the day, the celebration will continue throughout December with a series of ‘As Camp as Christmas’ artworks - produced in collaboration with Electric Confetti - adorning City Square, Scott Alley and Metro Tunnel HQ, on Swanston Street. 

In a nod to the environment, the artworks celebrate the glory and beauty of Australian flora and fauna.

The Metro Tunnel Project will deliver some Christmas gifts of its own in the coming weeks, with work powering ahead on the massive infrastructure project that will transform public transport in Melbourne. 

Work at the Anzac Station construction site on St Kilda Rd to realign the tram tracks one final time is taking place in December. The Anzac Station tram stop will be open by the end of the year marking the first part of the Metro Tunnel Project to be opened to the public.

In the coming months crews will lay more than 18 kilometres of track in the twin tunnels beneath Melbourne CBD; and continue installing state of the art signalling, communications and power equipment to get ready for test trains to start running in the second half of 2023.
