More homes and greater opportunities for renters

More homes and greater opportunities for renters

As our communities grow, so must our commitment to providing housing that is affordable, accessible, and tailored to the needs of all Victorians.

The Allan Labor Government’s Housing Statement is doing just that – putting us on a path to delivering more homes across Victoria while protecting renters, enhancing community infrastructure, and ensuring thoughtful, sustainable urban design.

More homes mean more opportunity and more beautiful, well-designed buildings. That’s why the Allan Labor Government is going all-in on townhouses and apartments that are affordable to build and will stand the test of time in quality, design, aesthetics and sustainability: grand designs, without the grand cost.

We have a turbocharged plan for Victoria’s future homes that will drive a new era of affordable architectural heritage in this state.

The plan will compel good design by rewarding affordable, well-designed sustainable buildings – and the developers who put in the effort to build them – by granting them a fast track through the planning system.

For renters, the More Homes policy introduces sweeping reforms to enhance fairness and transparency in the rental market. This includes protections such as banning unjust bond claims, limiting costly lease break fees, and eliminating no reason evictions that could otherwise force renters out without warning.

With nearly 30 per cent of Victorians renting, these changes address many longstanding concerns from renters and ensure greater stability in the housing market.

As Consumer Affairs Minister for Gabrielle Williams stated, “renters’ rights are all about respect – that’s the principle that we are trying to bring housing supply, improving rental fairness, and providing affordable options to the rental market through more than 130 reforms.”

The Allan Labor Government’s Housing Statement represents a bold commitment to addressing Victoria’s housing challenges by increasing housing supply, improving rental fairness, and providing affordable options for buyers and renters alike.

I am excited to support these efforts and see more Victorians benefit from affordable, sustainable, and inclusive communities.
