Peggy: Southbank’s four-legged Instagram star
British Bulldog Peggy has shared her life in Southbank and surrounds on Instagram since day one. Her account also captures her love for the sea very clearly.
Her friend Shaun, who was looking after Peggy on behalf of her owner, Tony, when Southbank News caught up with them in February, takes the eight-year-old for regular walks from her home in Southbank to the Royal Botanic Gardens.
“I probably look after her every week and just take her to the park when my friend Tony, her owner, is at work,” Shaun told Southbank News. “It is good exercise for me and good exercise for her.”
According to Shaun, Peggy loves to go to the park. He said the pair didn’t have a specific walking route but rather it was Peggy who decided where to go.
“She takes me where she wants to go, which is always the park, and she always takes me back home when she is finished as well. She decides on everything,” he said, but added that he couldn’t complain …
“You know, Melbourne has some of the most beautiful gardens and so many as well. We are always so lucky that they are right on our doorstep and so beautifully maintained with just lots of open space.”
Nevertheless, there is one other place Peggy loves more than the park.
“She loves the park, but she loves even more going in the ocean and swimming. She can actually swim really well,” Shaun said.
“So, that is her happy place. I think if she could choose where to live, it would be out in Port Phillip Bay.”
What else makes Peggy unique? According to Shaun, she didn’t have too many tricks up her sleeve.
“I think her trick is that she always gets her own way, and she is just cute and pretty active for a Bulldog,” he said, adding that while he was fairly compatible with other people and dogs, she “only does her own thing” most of the time.
It’s an approach to life that is displayed through her own Instagram account named “gettinpeggywithit”, which now features more than 250 posts. •
