Southbank artist Angelina Mirabito launches residency at The Gladstone

Southbank-based artist Angelina Mirabito has been named artist-in-residence at The Gladstone, where she will lead a three-month program at the recently opened Romulus Folio Gallery.

Located in the Montague Precinct of Fishermans Bend, Romulus Folio Gallery acts as both a creative platform and a connective space, offering artists, collectives, and the wider creative community a chance to showcase their work, engage with new opportunities, and contribute to cultural discourse.

The residency forms part of the Fishermans Bend Ideas initiative, which aims to infuse the Fishermans Bend precinct with art and creativity, and includes a range of offerings, from exhibitions and workshops to artist talks and dynamic installations

Through this program, Angelina will exhibit her own work alongside pieces from other local artists, with an emphasis on inviting the community to explore their own creative potential.

A contemporary abstract artist of Italo-Australian heritage, she is known for her expressive use of texture, colour, and emotion, whether on canvas or across walls.

Angelina’s practice is deeply influenced by her academic background, which includes a PhD exploring the therapeutic effects of creative writing, and informs her intuitive, self-taught approach to painting.

Painting, for her, is a way of giving form to feelings that words cannot fully express. Working primarily with palette knives, she embraces the tactile nature of the medium.

“Since a significant functional seizure reshaped how I process language and perception, art has become my primary means of articulation,” Angelina states in her artist statement.

“It allows me to engage with ideas and emotions beyond the constraints of words, leading to discoveries that feel both deeply personal and universally resonant.”

Angelina’s creative process is meditative and emotional, with each piece emerging from a particular feeling or internal tension, which she works through visually until it is resolved on the canvas.

My work is not about offering answers but about uncovering possibilities - fragments of understanding that shift and evolve over time.

In addition to the ongoing residency activities, Romulus Folio Gallery will present a special art and design showcase from May 15 to 24 as part of NGV Melbourne Design Week.

The event will explore the intersection of visual art and design, further cementing The Gladstone’s role as a thriving hub for creativity and innovation.
