Southbank set to welcome the Second Line Street Party of the Jazz Festival
The Second Line Street Party will set the tone for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, which runs from October 18 to 27. Now in its 27th year, the festival will feature more than 400 artists from 12 countries, performing in 109 events across 34 venues.
The streets of Melbourne will soon come alive with the energetic sounds of New Orleans, as the Second Line Street Party returns on October 19 to kick off the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF).
Starting from 1pm to 2pm at Red Stair Amphitheatre at Queensbridge Square on the festival’s opening weekend, the event will feature the renowned TBC Brass Band from New Orleans, bringing its unique rhythm and soul of the Crescent City.
This year’s parade promises to be a vibrant and festive event, with thousands expected to participate in a dynamic display of music and movement.
Formed in the late 1990s, the TBC Brass Band has earned its reputation as one of the leading brass bands in New Orleans. The group blends traditional brass band music with influences from funk, R&B, and hip-hop, creating a lively, street-party atmosphere that has captivated audiences around the world.
Known for their powerful performances, the band has played an integral role in keeping the spirit of New Orleans Street parades alive. Their involvement in this year’s street party marks their first appearance in Australia, adding an exciting international flair to the MIJF’s opening celebrations.
The 2024 program includes both paid and free events, making it accessible to a broad audience. The festival will showcase a diverse range of performances, from large-scale outdoor concerts to intimate sessions in Melbourne’s iconic jazz clubs.
Headliners include some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, and Esperanza Spalding.
“MIJF 2024 will be one of our most ambitious festivals to date, with a prolific line-up of gifted musicians set to join us this October in Melbourne,” artistic director Michael Tortoni said.
Whether it's in a parade, at the Bowl, in the city or out west, we’re so excited for audiences to join us again, celebrating all there is to love about this music.
For Southbank residents and visitors, the festival’s events will be easily accessible, with also many performances taking place in the heart of the city, including Federation Square and venues along the Yarra River.
