In a welcome sign of the new precinct’s growth, supermarket giant Coles opened a new “Local” store in Montague last month.

The new Coles Local supermarket and Liquorland was unveiled on November 1 at the ground floor of the recently completed R Iconic building on Normanby Rd, offering “a great food and drink destination”, “everyday specials” and “an artisan range” for local residents and nearby workers in South Melbourne and Port Melbourne.

In-store features and products from speciality chefs, bakers and butchers include an almost five-metre case filled with Australia’s best local and award-winning international cheeses; a selection of beef, pork, lamb, poultry and sausages from Meatsmith (Fitzroy, Brighton and St Kilda); fresh coffee with a vending station by DC Coffee; authentic and award-winning pizzas, fresh pasta, pasta sauces and lasagne from 400 Gradi; and a range of locally sourced fresh salads, soups and ready-made meals made in Moorabbin by Foxes Den.

Montague is one of four new mixed-use precincts as part of the urban renewal of Fishermans Bend, and the new supermarket, located at 259 Normanby Rd, South Melbourne, promises to be an important asset to this fast-growing community. •
