Sustainable events this November

The next Southbank Sustainability Group (SSG) event is a workshop focused on the role of herbs in health and wellbeing. In this interactive workshop, you will learn more about the medicinal uses of common culinary herbs and be introduced to the array of herbs growing in the community garden in front of the Boyd Community Hub.

Come along and learn how to identify, harvest, and preserve common garden herbs. This workshop is supported through a grant from the City of Melbourne.

The workshop is on Saturday, November 11 between 11.30am and 1pm in the Assembly Hall at the Boyd Community Hub. While the event is free it is essential that you book via Eventbrite

It is not too early to start planning for a more sustainable holiday season. The upcoming Re-love Festival to be held on Sunday, November 12 between 9am and 2pm at the Boyd Community Hub provides a perfect opportunity to buy preloved goods at the second-hand market – perfect for Christmas presents. There will also be kids’ activities, workshops, and music.

Our last event for the year also provides an opportunity to learn how to make sustainable Christmas cards and decorations. The workshop will be held on Saturday, December 2, between 11.30am and 1pm in the Assembly Hall at the Boyd Community Hub.

Come and learn how to make and decorate seed paper to create gorgeous gift cards or Christmas tree decorations that can be planted in pots or in a garden. Learn about pollinators, biodiversity, and the importance of rewilding urban spaces.

Keep an eye out on our Facebook page in the coming weeks for more details about this event and the Eventbrite link so you can register to attend.

It has been a busy month in the community garden.

The first of the tomato plants have gone in as have more herbs such as basil and parsley.

The broad beans are flowering so we can expect to see the beans in a few weeks.

Sadly, many of the strawberry plants have been stolen, however, there is plenty of fruit on the plants that remain.

With summer coming we are looking for more volunteers to help with the watering. Simply email us and let us know you are interested, and we can add you to the roster.
