Thank you, Macnamara
Serving our community for another three years is the greatest privilege of my life.
On election day, I spent most of my time at the Southbank North voting booth and at Victorian College of the Arts. I heard from new residents who were looking to buy their first home in our community, young couples who were worried about their HECS debts and families who were concerned about the rising cost of living.
Over the course of election day and throughout my time as the member for Macnamara, whenever I’m speaking to the Southbank community, I’m reminded of just how proud people are to call this area home.
And since May 3, I’ve been focused on ensuring we get straight back to work to deliver for our community.
From July 1, every household across Australia, Southbank included, is receiving $150 off their power bill. There’s no paperwork, no forms, just straightforward relief. At the same time, more than three million Australians who earn minimum or award wages received a 3.5 per cent pay rise. And for those looking to future-proof their homes, households with rooftop solar can now access a 30 per cent discount on home battery systems, cutting energy bills permanently.
From this month, students studying to become nurses, teachers, midwives or social workers will receive a payment during their mandatory placements. These are the next generation of essential workers, and they deserve to be valued and supported.
Moreover, we have extended paid parental leave by an extra two weeks, now up to 24 weeks total. And for the first time ever, the government will be paying superannuation on Paid Parental Leave. It’s game changing for new parents, and a big step towards closing the gender retirement pay gap. In addition, the Super Guarantee has increased to 12 per cent meaning more money going into your super account.
Healthcare also remains a core focus for us. From the start of this month, four new Medicare items to better support women’s health, including longer consultations and new menopause and perimenopause assessments.
We know that small businesses are the heartbeat of Southbank, and every local community, and we’re backing them too. The $20,000 Instant Asset Write-Off has been extended for another year, helping local operators invest in new tools, equipment and growth.
And when Parliament returns, our first order of business will be introducing legislation to cut HECS debt by 20 per cent.
There’s lots more work to be done, and I am incredibly honoured that the Prime Minister asked me to serve as the Special Envoy for Social Housing and Homelessness. Over our first term, we kick-started Australia’s biggest ever housing build with more homes across the country.
Having a safe place to live is more than a roof over your head, it’s the foundation for health, education and employment. Across our community there are fantastic organisations who work tirelessly to support Australians who need their help. From community housing providers to wrap-around services, my job is to work alongside them and all levels of Government as we build 55,000 social and affordable homes for Australians that need them.
Throughout all of this, I’ll continue to make sure that Southbank’s voice is heard.
Our office is back open, and my team and I are ready to help our wonderful community, and if you ever need something don’t hesitate to reach out. •
