WOTSO South Melbourne brings flexible work closer to home

WOTSO has opened its newest Melbourne workspace in South Melbourne's rapidly growing Montague Precinct, creating a local alternative for professionals, freelancers and businesses looking for a better way to work.

Having already established a presence in Melbourne with its Bank Place location in the CBD, the team kept hearing the same thing as they spent more time around the city: South Melbourne was changing quickly. New apartment buildings were appearing across the precinct, but the area had managed to retain the neighbourhood character that makes it so appealing, from the South Melbourne Market and Clarendon St cafés to the convenience of nearby public transport.

What really stood out that all these new residents were choosing to live locally, but many were still splitting their time between working from home and commuting into the CBD. We saw a gap and thought, this is exactly where people need a proper local option.

That need is already reflected in the mix of people using the space.

The South Melbourne location is home to a diverse range of members. We’ve got freelancers who've been working from their kitchen table for years and just want somewhere local to go that isn't home. We've got small teams who've outgrown that stage but don't want the CBD hassle of a commercial lease. What it tells us is people don't want to travel far to feel like they're “at work” anymore. They want work to fit into their local life, not the other way around.

Flexibility sits at the centre of that approach.

Rather than locking businesses into lengthy contracts, WOTSO offers month-to-month memberships with no large upfront commitments. The space includes 30 coworking desks, 18 private offices, meeting rooms, event space and virtual office services, allowing members to scale up or down as their needs change.

But the appeal extends beyond the physical space itself. The community aspect has become one of the defining features of the workspace, with members regularly connecting in shared spaces, exchanging ideas and supporting one another's businesses. The result is a workplace that feels less corporate and more like an extension of the neighbourhood around it.

As growth continues across Montague, Southbank and Fishermans Bend, WOTSO hopes to play an active role in strengthening the local business ecosystem. The team sees the space as a platform for collaboration and connection, bringing together people who are building businesses in one of Melbourne's fastest-growing precincts.

Many people have grown accustomed to working close to home and aren’t wanting to return to lengthy daily commutes. At the same time, they still want access to a professional environment when they need it. Rather than replacing the CBD altogether, flexible workspaces give people the ability to choose the environment that suits them best on any given day.

Looking ahead, WOTSO hopes to become known for more than just desks and offices.

We'd love for people to think of us as part of the local community, not just a workspace they rent a desk in. Somewhere the person at reception knows your name, where you might end up chatting to someone at the next desk who becomes a client or a mate, where local businesses and residents genuinely cross paths. That's what working locally should feel like - not isolated, just close to home, surrounded by your own neighbourhood.

As South Melbourne continues to evolve, WOTSO's focus remains simple: creating a place where people can work professionally, stay connected to their neighbourhood and feel part of a thriving local community.
