MSO under the big top
By Nicholas Li
The MSO is joining forces with an elite cast of international circus performers to present a marriage of classical music and circus acts at Hamer Hall.
Cirque de la Symphonie will showcase aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers and strongmen and will run for two nights – July 15 and 16.
The program features works by Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Bizet, DvoĆák and John Williams, with a special performance of Williams’ score for Hook to close the first half of proceedings.
The performers will exhibit their skills above, in front and around the musicians.
MSO associate conductor Benjamin Northey said the event would offer audiences a unique experience.
“This performance promises to be a wild and fun way to experience popular classical music. I can’t wait to see what the sound of the orchestra brings out in the circus performers as they dance, juggle and fly through the air all around us,” he said.
