Southbank cupboard holds key to Melbourne traffic

Melbourne’s traffic network was sent into chaos last month when both the Domain and Burnley tunnels were closed for 12 hours.

The morning peak on Wednesday, October 3 was most-affected, but traffic in and around Southbank struggled for most of the day as commuters looked for alternative routes.

The cause of the problem was a computer glitch which meant safety procedures within the tunnels were compromised. CityLink operators did not want to risk an incident as it would have had very little chance of responding to one.

The computer glitch was within a cupboard in the CityLink control room, right here in Southbank.
